A local resident stepped in to rescue a horse after it became trapped up to its neck in a water-filled ditch.

A fire crew from Clare and a water rescue unit from Bury St Edmunds answered a call to rescue the horse from the ditch near Clare Town FC’s ground in Harp Lane just after 5pm on Saturday (14).

Crews initially failed to pull the horse free by looping a 70m hosepipe and lines underneath the animal.

Whilst crews were waiting for Essex Fire and Rescue to arrive with a Unimog the local resident was able to use a 4x4 vehicle to pull the horse free using strops and a winch.

The horse was out and safe by 6.06pm and all crews back at base by 7.02pm.
