Identity revealed in Haverhill Echo archive photo

Both Dennis Boreham and Rene Davey spotted this photo in last week’s Echo nostalgia feature, Echoes of the Past, and got in touch to tell us who it was pictured opening the new car park at Thurlow Primary School in March 2001.

Rene had more reason than anyone else to recognise who it is, as it was her own mum, Ruth Atherton, who was invited to cut the ribbon. Mrs Atherton was then aged 100 and was invited to conduct the opening as she was the oldest person in the village. She lived to be 104.
