Accord Healthcare makes 'difficult' decision to close Haverhill site
Jobs are at risk after a Haverhill factory which makes phamaceutical products is earmarked for closure.
Accord Healthcare, in Homefield Road, will close in June 2019, the company has confirmed.
The site, which has 84 staff, manufactures generic medicines.
It said this week the decision to close in Haverhill had been ‘difficult’.
A spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately the site does not have the space or facilities needed to develop it further.
“As we grow, we need to structure our activities to manage our reliability to customers, ensuring patients continue to get access to effective high-quality medicines.
“Our Haverhill site has long been a valued part of our growth story and we are keen to retain as many as possible from the talented permanent employees we currently have working at the site.”
She added that the firm would be discussing a ‘full range of options’ with all affected staff, including potential opportunities at Accord’s other sites across the UK.
“Employees have elected an employee representative group (ERG) and part of the consultation with the ERG is to ensure any support we provide is tailored towards employee ‘requirements’, added the spokeswoman.
There are currently 36 permanent employees at Haverhill and 48 on fixed-term contracts. Twelve people are relocating to Accord’s site in Fawdon, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The company employs more than 1,400 staff, with the majority based at its English sites in Barnstaple, Fawdon and its headquarters and laboratory in Harrow.
It describes itself as ‘one of the fastest growing generic pharmaceutical companies in the UK and Ireland’ and distributes products to more than 70 countries.
