Kind strangers give sick Lilly-Mae a special birthday

Kind strangers have helped give a sick, five-year-old girl a memorable birthday.

Lilly-Mae, from Great Yeldham, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in January last year.

Her journey through treatment has been shared on social media, with thousands of people following her brave struggle.

So when doctors told her she might, like last year, have to spend her birthday in hospital, her disappointment was shared by many.

Among them were Facebook friends Wendy Smith and Mandy Telford who appealed for as many people as possible to send birthday cards to the sick child.

The Haverhill pair were shocked by the response.

People rallied to help and soon card banks were being set up in neighbouring towns and villages.

Others sent gifts while Leah Kennard, of Bury St Edmunds-based Naughty But Nice Cakes, made a Frozen-themed birthday cake and Josie May Harrington, of Linton-based A Fairytale Fantasia, arranged to visit dressed as The Snow Queen, a character which resembles the popular Disney princess, Elsa.

“We were excited with 20 cards and now it’s at more than 500,” said Wendy, ahead of Lilly-Mae’s fifth birthday on Tuesday.

“I can’t believe how lovely people are, it’s been amazing,” she added.

And the best bit – Lilly-Mae got to spend her birthday at home after all.
