A one-of-a-kind hairdressing salon based in Hundon has been crowned Best New Business in the London and East of England Region in The British Hair and Beauty Awards.

Owner Tanya Simpson, of Windmill Rise, Hundon, aptly markets her business, Suffolk Hairways, as a ‘Salon on Wheels’.

And that’s exactly what it is, because the entire salon –styling chair, backwash basin, hot water supply and seating area – is to be found in the back of a converted Ford Transit.

Tanya, who is married with two boys, aged three and eight, said: “It is what you can get in any barbers or salon in town but it’s on the back of a truck.

“It is apparently the only one in the UK that is actually a salon on wheels.”

The idea for Suffolk Hairways had been in Tanya’s mind for ‘a long time’, she said, and after 15 years at a salon in Bury St Edmunds, seven of which were spent as the owner, she bought the van in August 2016.

Two months later, after a few headaches along the way, it was kitted out and ready for business.

Tanya said: “It’s something I had spoken about for years and years but I didn’t know how it would work and didn’t know how it would function.”

Clients have the option of climbing on board or inviting Tanya into their home, and she has a network of village hall car parks and other parking spots where she can station the salon, including Hundon village hall, where she can be found every other Wednesday.

On winning the award she said: “It was a big shock. Out of the hundreds of people who have entered this award and have big salons I never thought a little truck like mine would come out on top.”
