Haverhill club combines running and mental wellbeing




A group that uses running as a means for its members to meet new people and help their mental wellbeing is will meet again next week - and new participants are welcome to join.

Run and Talk is completely free and for complete beginners, whether you run slow, fast or have never ran before in your life, it really doesn’t matter.

It was launched last October by Sil Clay, the coach, and Clair Gale, who is its mental health champion and admin officer.

Their roles are completely voluntary and and separate from Haverhill Running Club, where they are both members.

Clair said: "Sil and I are both very passionate about Run and Talk and both have reasons as to why we wanted to take part and make this group grow.

"We are a really friendly group of people and anyone is welcome.

"We have a Facebook page @Runandtalkhaverhill and here you can find out all the news from the previous runs to the next.

"There is also an email for us to be contacted on should anyone have any questions or just want to talk in confidence; runandtalk@haverhillrunningclub.com."

Run and Talk takes place on the first Wednesday of each month.

The next one is on May 1 at 7pm, meeting outside Haverhill Leisure Centre for a gentle 5k, only ever running as fast as the slowest person, sticking together as a group and chatting the way round.

Clair added: "For Sil, she is recovering from serious head operations which unfortunately left her with some mental side effects, running helps her to deal with the challenges as a result and life in general.

"For myself, I suffer with anxiety and always doubt myself and my capabilities, many people suffer with anxiety too but the problem is we don't talk about it.

"For me, running helps me to clear my head and by talking to others in a similar position.

"I am finding out every day that what I feel isn’t weird and that running with friends makes me happy and feel fantastic mentally and physically.

"I am much more able to do more than I ever thought possible and deal with day to day tasks."

The group, said Clair, is aware of a Run and Revise session from May 13 to 19 organised by Runtogether to support mental health for students, but will be coinciding it with its next session in May.

At the session students can run and feel like they have cleared their mind ready for their exams coming up.
