Cyclists of all ages and abilities will be able to tour St Edmundsbury during an inaugural sportive to be held this summer.

The organisers of HaverHalf, Haver10 and HaverTri, which last year raised more than £19,000 for local charities, are now putting on a trio of cycling events on Sunday, August 16.

They are the Haver50 (50 km), Haver100 (100km from Haverhill to Bury St Edmunds) and the HaverUltra, which is 200km.

All three events will be held to raise money for the Haverhill Scouts and Guides new building fund, and will start and finish at Castle Manor Academy.

Ruth Walker, event organiser and assistant Scout leader, said: “We’ve seen how popular competing in athletics events in Haverhill is by last year’s successes, so hopefully we can build on that with the sportive.

“Cycling itself is clearly popular as evidenced by the thriving cycling club and so many people from the town heading to Finchingfield to see the Tour de France pass through in the summer.

“The three distances afford a chance for cyclists of all ages and abilities to get involved in one of the events so hopefully we’ll be well supported.”

Duncan Batty, group Scout leader at 1st Haverhill, said: “Haverhill Scouts and Guides provide youth activities for over 300 children in the town, so it’s crucial we provide fit for purpose buildings for them to continue offering these activities.

“Last year’s HaverTri raised almost £6,000 for us, so hopefully the Sportive can raise even more to help us meet the total we need.

“There was great support for HaverSports’ events last year so hopefully that will be even more in 2015.”

There is not yet a flagship sponsor for the sportive, though supporters include Haverhill Town Council, Suffolk County Council, Iceni Waters, Aerocycles Haverhill, Tesco Haverhill, Castle Manor Academy, Eastern Facilities Management Solutions, 297 Ltd, OS Communications, The Wicked Cake Company, Perform Sports Therapy, and Stylize Display Graphics.
