New-look sixth form for Haverhill earns praise from MP
A new sixth form education centre for students in Haverhill has been hailed as “fantastic” by the town MP.
Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, visited Haverhill Community Sixth Form and saw first-hand the enhanced facilities including independent study and social areas.
After speaking to students, the heads at both Samuel Ward and Castle Manor Academy and the new head of sixth form, Daisy Hopkins, Mr Hancock said the new post-16 education offering was a great addition for Haverhill.
He said: “The new revamped facilities at Haverhill Community Sixth Form are fantastic.
“The improved areas such as the café, the IT suite and the dedicated work areas are great for the pupils – and they make staying in Haverhill for the sixth form a very good option for local pupils.
“It was great to have a tour and meet some of the Year 12 pupils who spoke so highly of their school. It was an excellent visit and I’m so pleased to see Haverhill Community Sixth Form going from strength to strength.”
Miss Hopkins, said: “We would like to thank Mr Hancock for visiting our new facilities and we look forward to showcasing it to parents and students at our sixth form open evening on Thursday, October 11.”
The sixth form centre, which remains on the site of Samuel Ward Academy, includes silent and group study areas, greater IT and pastoral care facilities and a coffee shop - following a consultation exercise with students.
Vanessa Whitcombe, headteacher at Castle Manor Academy said: “It was fantastic to join Matt Hancock see the new Haverhill Community Sixth Form facilities that will benefit students across the town.”
Andy Hunter, headteacher at Samuel Ward Academy, added: “The new-look sixth form is a fantastic addition to post-16 education in the town and we would like to thank Matt Hancock for visiting and discussing the new facilities with students.
“It was also great to see students show complete confidence in discussing current affairs and politics with a senior member of the cabinet.”
