Potential Sawston developments up for public consultation

The public is being asked to take part in a consultation over a number of potential locations in Sawston that could be used to build more than 500 new homes.

Land at Dales Manor Business Park (60 homes), land north of White Field Way (90 homes), former Marley Tiles site, Dale Manor Business Park (260 homes) and land north of Babraham Road (110 homes) have all been identified as possible sites for development by South Cambridgeshire District Council (SDC).

The Sawston sites are among 11 that SCDC is testing public support for in villages that have been assessed after they were put forward by land owners and developers in response to the first Local Plan consultation last summer.

The other sites for consultation in SCDC’s district are:

Cambourne – Business Park land (240 homes)

Histon – Former Bishops Hardware Store (10 or more homes)

Melbourn – land to the east of New Road (205 homes), orchard and land at East Farm (65 homes)

Comberton – Land at Bennell Farm, West Street (115 homes)

Waterbeach – land north of Bannold Road (90 homes)

Cllr Pippa Corney, SCDC’s cabinet member for planning policy and localism, agreed the sites at a public meeting on Thursday, December 13 to support up to 30,000 new jobs being created in the district up until 2031.

Councillors have confirmed that a joint consultation alongside Cambridge City Council will begin on Monday, January 7 to give people in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire a chance to have their say before any decisions on future development plans are made.

Sites agreed for consultation on the fringes of Cambridge follow a consultation in the summer when views were asked on ten broad locations in the green belt.

Most locations have effectively been ruled out by the council, but views are now being asked on sites:

- either side of Worts’ Causeway for around 480 homes

- on Fulbourn Road either side of the ARM site for employment, with another for around 75 homes or employment

- west of Histon Road – to be known as the NIAB 3 site – for an extension of 130 additional homes and employment.

Possible community stadium sites – that were announced last month – have also been agreed for a joint public consultation.

Upon agreeing the locations, Cllr Corney said that none of the locations were “an ideal option” as each had “pros and cons” to be debated through consultation.

The eight sites are – Trumpington Meadows – which would include 420 new homes, Union Place site north of the A14 between Milton and Histon, the NIAB 3 site off Histon Road, Cowley Road – including the former Park & Ride site, north of Newmarket Road, the new town of Northstowe, a possible new town at Waterbeach Barracks and a possible new village at Bourn Airfield.

Suggestions by some parish councils for a more flexible approach to allow more development on the edge of their villages to meet local aspirations will also be consulted on, as well as areas suggested for protection, future recreational purposes and open spaces.

Two specific parish council-led proposals suggested for consultation are:

Cottenham – Development of nearly 250 acres north-east of the village for up to 1,500 homes and employment to fund a proposed village bypass.

Histon & Impington – Regeneration of the station area near the Guided Busway for shops and businesses as a ‘gateway’ to the village – which would include housing on the former Bishops site.

The joint public consultation will run from Monday, January 7 to 5pm on Monday, February 18.

Responses to the joint part of the consultation only need to be made once through either council’s website – www.scambs.gov.uk or www.cambridge.gov.uk.

A full list of consultation events will be announced before Christmas.

Views from the summer and forthcoming consultations will be used by each council to draft its development plan up to 2031.

A further consultation will then be carried out next summer and proposals will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for public examination in 2014.
