Haverhill people in need of an exercise goal can get a training package and event entry worth £200 for £25 as the costs are subsidised.

Those between 12 and 25 who do not regularly exercise can aim to compete in the Great East Swim 2014, with the package including event entry, three months’ training with professional coaches, six months’ membership at Abbeycroft Leisure Centre and wesuit hire

Suffolk County Council, Sport England and Suffolk Sport are subsidising the cost of the programme, which also applied to Newmarket with 24 places available between the two towns.

Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care: “It’s the first year we’re able to offer this fully supported training opportunity to those over the age of 50, as well as younger people.

“I feel that opening the training up to this audience, many with low levels of participation in sport and physical activity, will really help us in our efforts to make Suffolk the most active county in England.

“The programme which focuses on the individual and their ability, aims to improve confidence, motivation, social skills, fitness and energy levels, self esteem, mobility and stamina.

“I’m confident this year’s programme will build positively on the success of its predecessors and provide much benefit to those taking on the challenge”

John Clough, director of Suffolk Sport, said: “Suffolk Sport is delighted once again to be able to offer the challenge of the Great East Swim as an incentive to get more people physically active. Last year the programme was a great success, transforming the lives of a number of inactive young people. This year’s expanded programme will enable even more people to be involved.”

The offer also applied to over 50s with 24 places to be held in Ipswich at Crown Pools.
