The Great Suffolk Bake Off comes to Bury St Edmunds

The Great Suffolk Bake is coming to Bury St Edmunds in the hope of discovering the county’s best amateur baker

The search is on to find Suffolk’s best amateur baker and a Signature Bake our county can be proud of in a contest organised in their free time by local business Genesis PR in aid of county-wide charity St Elizabeth Hospice.

The Great Suffolk Bake Off will arrive in Bury St Edmunds on February 23 at Abbeycroft Leisure Centre.

Amateur bakers across the west of the county will be invited to bring along their Suffolk Signature Bakes for judging by a panel of experts including local chef Emma Crowhurst, local restaurant owner Regis Crepy (Maison Bleue), Chris Lee (head chef at the award winning Bildeston Crown) and qualified cookery judge Jane Sago from the Suffolk East Federation of Women’s Institutes.

The professionals are joined on the judging panel by BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Lesley Dolphin and editor of Suffolk magazine, Jayne Lindill.

There will be sweet and savoury categories and prizes for both grown-up bakers and young bakers under 16.

The only criteria is that all bakes must have an essence of Suffolk, whether it’s using local ingredients, in its presentation or if the recipe has a real Suffolk heritage.

We want to hear from all bakers from every corner of the county.

The team at Suffolk PR agency Genesis PR are giving their time freely to organise the contest and entry fees of £5 (minimum donation) per baker will go directly to St Elizabeth Hospice via the hospice’s online fundraising site (

The event has been organised in aid of Genesis PR’s efforts towards the St Elizabeth Hospice Accumulator Challenge.

The team were given £50 in October 2012 and have six months to turn this into as much money as possible for St Elizabeth Hospice before April 2013.

Penny Arbuthnot, director of Genesis PR, said: “The idea for The Great Suffolk Bake Off is a response to the terrific BBC series and who knows, we may even be able to identify an iconic Suffolk bake and the talent which will help put Suffolk further on the map for great local food.

“The team is looking forward to having lots of fun whilst raising much needed funds for the outstanding work of St Elizabeth Hospice.”

For all the foodies of Suffolk who would like to watch the judging spectacle and be in with a chance of tasting some of the entries afterwards they will be welcome to join in the fun at the Great Suffolk Bake Off.

Further money will be raised through a charitable raffle and some fun baking related games.

Sarah Archer, of St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “Our Accumulator Challenge is a fantastic way for local businesses to get involved and support the hospice in a variety of creative and exciting ways.

“We are delighted to have Genesis PR as one of the many companies on board and are really looking forward to Suffolk’s Signature Bake.

“Every penny raised will help us to continue to provide hospice care for local people free of charge.”

The Great Suffolk Bake Off began at St Elizabeth Hospice on Foxhall Road in Ipswich on January 19.

There was a further event in Lowestoft on February 2 at Lowestoft College, and Bury St Edmunds on February 23 at Abbeycroft Leisure Centre (12pm-2pm) before the winners are invited to a grand final which will take place in March.

There will be certificates for individual category winners at each heat and prizes for winners of the grand final.
