Changes at the top at two Haverhill primary schools
The shock departure of the headteacher from one Haverhill school has paved the way for not just one, but two new headteachers in the town.
David Maguire has this week taken over as head at Westfield Primary Academy, moving from Coupals Primary Academy where he has spent six years, the last four as head.
He replaces Nicky Tyler, who stood down over the summer holidays after more than three-and-a half-years in the post - and a total of 19 years at Westfield.
Martha Hughes, Mr Maguire's deputy at Coupals, is now its headteacher.
Mr Maguire said he decided to accept his new challenge knowing that he would leave Coupals in the 'experienced' hands of someone who is 'ready' for their first headship.
He added that, after being welcomed by a 'really positive group of staff' his first objective is to not change too much, adding: "We've agreed to start the year with really high expectations for our kids and to make sure that we continue to build those positive relationships with the staff and the kids and their families."
Tim Coulson, Chief Executive of Unity Schools Partnership, said: “We would like to place on record our thanks and gratitude to Nicky Tyler who has dedicated 19 years to Westfield Primary, leading the school with commitment and passion.
“We are delighted that David Maguire has agreed to take up the position as headteacher for the next 12 months.
“David is a very well-respected school leader in Haverhill and beyond and I know he will lead Westfield to even greater heights.
“Likewise, we are delighted that Martha Hughes has agreed to become headteacher at Coupals Primary Academy.
“One of the key attributes within the Unity Schools Partnership is how we can quickly react to change by utilising key staff members across different schools to ensure the best possible education for our young students.”
In a letter to staff at the school, Ms Tyler said she was stepping down for her own “personal and professional reasons”.
She added: “I would like to thank you all for your support, hard work and dedication to the school and myself over the years. I know I will be leaving the school in good hands and would like to wish you all the best of luck for the future.”
