Expansion of Menta Business Centre in Haverhill gets the green light

An extension to the Menta Business Centre in Haverhill will go ahead after it was approved last week.

The centre in Hollands Road will have a new reception area and two new units built on to the side of the building after the plans were approved at the borough council’s development control committee last Thursday.

Two existing units will also be converted into conference rooms, new footpaths provided and existing car parking rearranged.

The project had only been possible thanks to £502,000 in funding secured by the borough council through a Section 106 agreement with Asda, when it built a filling station in Bury St Edmunds on land allocated for small employment units.

The contribution was ring-fenced to provide similar opportunities in the borough, with start up businesses in Haverhill now benefitting.

Cllr John Burns expressed concern at the meeting over the loss of some car parking spaces, and that the gate to the parking area is left open at night.

He also said he was 'very pleased' that Huffers Café is to be relocated into a bigger space inside the centre to allow for the extension to be built.

Cllr Burns' parking concerns were allayed by planning officer Savannah Cobbold, who said the 42 spaces provided is above the 37 required by regulations.

Cllr David Roach added: "I fully support this. It is much needed, so let's get on with it."

Cllr Paula Fox said: "I really welcome this. This is a really vibrant little place. A few years ago it was really down and no it's really vibrant."

The plans were unanimously approved by the committee.
