A community interest group hoping to save The Thurlow Cock from residential use is asking people to invest in the pub’s future.
The pub in The Street, Little Thurlow, has been on the market for more than a year and there are concerns it could be bought and converted into housing.
It was registered as an Asset of Community Value in July 2015, giving the community the right to bid on it before it is sold but that deadline is up on February 27 so it needs to act quickly.
A website has been launched to help raise the £400,000 needed to buy the freehold and shares are available to friends of The Cock and residents of the surrounding villages for £250 each, with no one person able to purchase more than 30 per cent.
A business plan on the website says: “It is proposed that the pub should be bought by a newly-formed company (name to be confirmed) which will be funded by a share issue to local people and others. This will enable it to be run on a commercial basis to ensure financial viability whilst being under community control.”
It adds: “A good food offering will be key to the sustainability of The Cock to bring in custom from outside of the village so that is seen as a destination pub as well as a pub serving the local community.”
