Students from Castle Manor and Samuel Ward Academies impressed locals with their business and retail skills while manning stalls at Haverhill’s youth market.

The event took place last Saturday (May 16), with students arriving on site early to set up stalls along with seasoned market traders in the town’s High Street.

Four groups of 20 students, aged between 13 and 16, were set the challenge of creating a business with a start-up grant of just £50.

Sharon Fairweather, markets development officer for St Edmundsbury Borough Council which runs the markets, said she was very pleased with the result.

She commented: “It went very well. The stall looked great, the pupils worked hard and brought lots of things to sell and made the whole thing feel very special.

“The weather was kind to us and they made a real buzz in the market place,

“The regular market traders were very supportive and were trying to support the young people.

“I think it was definitely successful. We want young people to consider trading on the market and have an idea of careers in business.

“The schools did very well and they all worked very hard to make this happen. feel very special.

Speaking about the day, Claire Diamond, Business Teacher at Castle Manor Academy, said: “All of the students did extremely well.

“They put hours of preparation in to the event and their conduct on the day was excellent. They all dealt with customers very effectively.

“The business students are in the middle of a cross-school business competition and every Castle Manor Academy group managed to turn a profit on their initial capital. We’re looking forward to the final results soon.”
