Ainsworth gets off to a winning start for Haverhill cycling team
Nick Ainsworth won the Veterans race for Aerocycles/Haverhill Cycling Club in the first race of the Mud Sweat and Gears summer series.
The team sported a new eye catching kit as they started the mountain biking campaign at Shouldham Warren near Downham Market with yet more great results.
A superfast start set up Ainsworth’s victory after 1hr 37mins of hard racing. Steve Foster rode steadily to finish in 30th.
Under-9s team mates Oli Skyrme and Austin Ainsworth were joined by Austin’s four year-old sister Eva who was one of the youngest competitors there.
Austin got a flying start and missed the snarl up at the first corner to sprint to third place, his first podium finish.
Oli Skyrme was fifth after getting caught up at the start but rode well considering the day before he had taken part in the Inter school Cyclocross race and finished in a very credible fourth place.
Eva rode a great race, with a smile on her face and managed to beat two of the boys.
The main course could only be described as a four mile peat sponge which was really hard going and made a very technical hilly course leg shattering.
Open category riders performed well with Alan Gardner finishing 15th, Dan Heath 31st and Female rider Cara Ainsworth finishing in joint sixth place.
Sam Tiplady was going well but had to retire after a mechanical problem. Gary Sparkes finished in 69th.
Sport male Rob Elliott finished in 39th.
Round Two takes place at Carver Barracks on March 22 and anybody wanting any details should contact Aerocycles in Falconer Road, Haverhill on 01440 762200.
