A wonder goal from Matt Staines was one of few positives for Haverhill Borough as they were thrashed 5-1 at home by March Town United on Saturday.

The away side took the lead almost immediately, as a March corner was headed in by Jordan Goult, who left Borough goalkeeper Charlie Turner with no chance. Staines’ goal came from the resulting kick off, as he received the ball and curled it past Dave Beeney from distance to draw the home side level.

The visitors were not to be denied their lead, and after a quick exchange of passes, Ondre Odain found himself in space inside the six yard box, and the striker made no mistake to put the visitors ahead 2-1 after just nine minutes.

Another sensational Borough equaliser looked on the cards when Tom Farlie’s mis-hit pass from the halfway line looked to trouble Beeney, but luckily for the goalkeeper the ball went wide. Just past the half-hour mark, March doubled their lead, as Odan again headed in a corner.

A further talking point came five minutes later, as goalkeeper Turner appeared to take down Matt Barber with the subsequent award of a penalty to the Hares.

However, Turner saved Barber’s spot-kick to keep his team in the game going into half time.

March scored their fourth goal shortly after the interval, as Gerard Evans rose highest from another set-piece - this time a free kick - to give the away side a 4-1 lead.

Borough nearly pulled one back just after the hour in a bizarre turn of events, as Ryan Swallow’s corner hit the bar directly before John Milne’s follow-up backheel was blocked.

March got their fifth as Shane Cooke beat Garth Thomas to a clearance and Turner with the outside of his foot to complete the hosts’ misery.
