Bowers holds off the competition to take seniors’ crown

Past captain Peter Bowers emerged victorious as 45 seniors battled it out for the Vets Trophy in a mixed Stableford at Haverhill Golf Club.

Last Tuesday’s competition saw some excellent scores returned with Bowers’ 43 points reducing his handicap by two shots to 12, while runner-up John Grainger managed 40pts and in third place was Bob Hammett with 38pts. Ann Thompson returned the best score for the ladies with 34pts.

n On Saturday Haverhill struggled to find their form as they went down to a 12.5-5.5 defeat at Stoke-by-Nayland in the Curry Cup.

Three of the visitors’ team secured a win: Eamonn Bareham, Andy Fish and James Hastie, with Scott Turner, Andy Gage and Mel Stuart halving their matches.

Haverhill play in their final league match on Saturday, July 4 at home against The Essex.

n A team from Haverhill were jubilant when they won the Hintlesham Mixed Open last Wednesday.

The team consisting of Linda Alexander, Mary Sail, Alan Carter and Ciaran Brennan competed against 12 other teams from around Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

Their score of 87 points was just one point clear of the runners-up but enough to win them a green fee voucher to play 18 holes at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club.

n Some fabulous scores were returned during the Men’s Midweek Medal played on the same day.

The overall winner, Dave Pipe, carded a sublime nett 63 to claim victory and he cut his handicap by two shots to five.

The full results were: Division One: 1st Dave Pipe 70-7-63, 2nd Chris Vince 69-1-68 on count-back (ocb), 3rd John Kennedy 79-11-68; Division Two: 1st Stewart Johnstone 89-19-70 ocb, 2nd Frank Robertson 90-20-70 ocb, 3rd Wayne Smith 83-13-70; Division Three: 1st David Hiscox 94-28-66, 2nd Richard Elding 92-23-69 ocb, 3rd Chris Powell 92-23-69.

n Ann Thompson won The Ladies Midweek Medal with a nett 76, while Judy Farren was second with a nett 82 on ocb from third place Doreen Crosbee with a nett 82.

n In the Ladies Saturday Medal on Saturday, Haverhill junior Fiona Stokes was the runaway winner with a superb nett 69.

The runner-up was Pat Kennedy with a nett 79 and in third place was Ann Thompson with a nett 82. Fiona trimmed her handicap by a shot to 16.

n The Lady Captain’s Charity Day held last Thursday saw an impressive turnout of 60 ladies, representing 10 clubs from Suffolk and Essex in the team Stableford event.

The format was best two scores to count for the first six holes, then three scores to count for holes 7-12 and finally all four scores to count for holes 13-18.

The winning team from Braintree of Caroline Fields, Val Bethel, Cyd Redford and Mary Goodwin scored 103pts.

In second place was a team representing Bishop’s Stortford with 100pts, and in third place were Marilyn Parmenter, Linda Pestrell, Sue Snell and Wendy Hutton, also representing Braintree with 98pts.

Nearest the pin on the eighth hole was won by Sheila Ridings from Braintree and longest drive on 14th was won by Lindsey Matthews of Chelmsford.

Ladies Committee Member and former ladies captain at Haverhill, Doreen Darbey, assisted by past ladies captain Theresa Spittle, gave the prize presentation.

Other members of the Ladies Committee and Ladies Section, including Gill Richardson, Chris Grainger, Val Shipp, Jo Stokes, Siobhan Harrison and Jenni Bradnam, helped to organise the hugely successful day.

The raffle raised £310 for the 2015 ladies captain Sheila Price’s chosen Charity, Diabetes UK.

n Terry Lyons and Pete McLennan claimed the latest ‘major’ on the Haverhill calendar, The HMP Foursomes.

Their victory was secured with a superb score of 41pts, playing off a combined handicap of 12.

The runners-up were the father-and-son partnership of Roger and Scott Turner with 39pts, playing off a combined handicap of 15 and in third were Dave Pipe and Dan Wilkins with 37pts, playing off a combined handicap of 10.

n Haverhill Ladies endured a nailbiting finish against Newton Green to progress through the preliminary round of the Cranworth Trophy at Stowmarket on May 28.

Doreen Darbey’s side had led 2-1 following the morning foursomes before going on to record a 5.5-3.5 victory to set up a tie with Bury St Edmunds at Rushmere on June 25.
