BREAKING NEWS: Ben Cowling named as Haverhill Rovers new manager
Former Haverhill Borough manager and chairman Ben Cowling has been appointed as the new first team manager at Haverhill Rovers.
Cowling, who also played over 300 times for Haverhill Rovers, managed Haverhill Borough from the day they were first formed as Haverhill Sports Association (HSA) in the summer of 2011.
He guided them to the Essex & Suffolk Border League Division One title before taking them into second place in the Premier Division the following season and with it, promotion into the Thurlow Nunn League First Division.
Following the promotion to the Thurlow Nunn League, HSA was renamed Haverhill Borough and in their first season at step six football finished in fourth place, only missing out on promotion to the Premier Division by one point.
A joint statement from Borough and Rovers said: “At the end of his playing career he managed the Reserve team to significant success before being asked by the Rovers committee to form what subsequently became the Haverhill Sports Association.
“The HSA had remarkable success, obtaining two consecutive promotions and a number of cup runs, before becoming Haverhill Borough as it entered the Thurlow Nunn league in 2013.
“Borough’s success as a club has continued during this time with the formation of a Reserve team which has recently been promoted to the Kershaw League Senior B division, and with the first team winning the First Division knock-out cup in recent weeks.
“The club is also looking forward to moving into a new stadium in August of this year.
“Throughout this time Ben has been fundamental to the success of the club, first as manager and more recently as club chairman.
“His drive and commitment are second to none and he has been dedicated to ensuring that local players within the town are afforded the opportunity to play football at the highest level – a driving aim of Haverhill Borough.
“Whilst a tremendous administrator, Ben’s first love has always been with the game itself, and the opportunity which has been offered to him by Haverhill Rovers is one he cannot turn down.
“Haverhill Borough wish Ben every success in his move, and look forward to the future with continuing optimism.
“The whole club continues to progress under a strong committee which will be widened in the coming days, whilst in the interim, treasurer David Hardwick will become chairman.
“Martin Westcott has proved himself as a fine player/manager over the last season and has a group of players who are committed to bringing further success to the town in the next few seasons.
“Haverhill Rovers would like to take this opportunity in thanking Haverhill Borough for their co-operation and professionalism in dealing with this transition and look forward to forming a closer working relationship moving forward.
“Haverhill Rovers are delighted to welcome Ben Cowling on board.
“Ben was always the committees preferred choice to become the new manager and has a proven track record within local football especially after his successes previously as both Haverhill Rovers reserve team and Haverhill Borough first team manager but as importantly always conducts himself in a professional manner which is a vital trait when heading up an FA Charter Standard Community Football Club as he will be a role model for many young people.”
