Bunch hat-trick helps Haverhill hammer St Ives
DIVISION THREE NW(S)
St Ives III 0 Haverhill 6
Tina Bunch scored a hat-trick as Haverhill recorded their joint second biggest win of the season to consolidate fifth place in the table.
Vicky Steed returned from a back injury but forwards Mandy Williamson and Bryony Hammett were out, as were captain Emily Humphry and Claire Goldsmith, leaving Haverhill with only 11 players.
Haverhill soon started to play some great passing hockey with the midfield, especially Amanda Stopps, Cara Ainsworth, Tina Bunch and Helen Salter, working well.
They were rewarded after ten minutes when Victoria Smith opened the scoring after picking up a well placed pass from Anne Reed.
Steed then doubled the lead from a short corner, thumping the back board with a straight strike.
The visitors went down to ten players as Helen Salter received treatment on her ankle, but Haverhill continued to push forward.
Tina Bunch scored the first of her hat-trick after connecting well with Reed’s pass.
The St Ives defence switched off when the umpire played an advantage after the ball hit a defender’s foot, and Aisha Shu snuck the ball past the keeper.
Just before end of the first half Steed was fouled in the D to win another short corner but had to leave the field after aggravating her back injury, leaving Bunch to convert Jane Farrow’s pass for 5-0.
The second half saw Haverhill subdued Helen and Vicky back on pitch but not fully mobile and the passing game which was so evident in the first half disappeared.
St Ives started to push forward and finally test ‘keeper Debbie Petrucci, and were unlucky not to score two or three goals, with Haverhill at one point leaving an open goal.
Haverhill did add one more goal to complete the 6-0 win and allowing Bunch to complete her hat-trick in the process. Amanda Stopps was the player of the match.
Haverhill play Cambridge Nomads II at the leisure centre on Saturday (3pm).
