Haverhill 185-5 beat Hadleigh 184 by five wickets

All rounder Dan Poole starred with both bat and ball as Haverhill defeated their higher-ranked opponents in their only friendly before the new Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship season starts on Saturday.

Hadleigh beat Haverhill by 20 runs in the final match of the 2014 season to confirm the latter’s relegation from Division One, but there was to be no repeat of that result on Saturday at Manor Road.

Haverhill’s opening bowlers Poole (3-29) and skipper Joe Woodley (3-21) reduced Hadleigh to 10-4 before the visitor’s wicketkeeper Ben Wallis and all-rounder Kyle Tanner rebuilt the innings with a half-century partnership.

Ben Wilkins took a return catch off Wallis to dismiss him for 74 and Dan Pass trapped Tanner lbw for 36 as Hadleigh were finally dismissed for 184.

Haverhill lost opener Sam Powell early on in their reply but a good partnership between Sam Hartshorn (35) and number three Josh Ruthven steadied the ship.

Both Hartshorn and Ruthven fell but Adam Dellar top scored with 49 and Poole added 42 runs to go with his three wickets as Haverhill got home with five wickets to spare.

Haverhill open their Division Two campaign at Manor Road on Saturday (1pm start) against Easton, who finished fifth in the division last year.
