Duo crowned British champions

Haverhill-based Japanese fencing Dojo KenYuKan returned from the weekend’s British Kendo Association’s National Iado and Jodo Championships with two British champions.

On the Saturday the club attended the iaido event, entering five individual candidates in four divisions and a three-man team.

The trio of David Parker 4th Dan, Gavin Rogers 4th Dan and Tecwyn Lee 1st Dan narrowly missed out on a medal position but Parker and Lee both won their individual divisions to carry off gold medals and the trophies.

Martin Clark 6th Dan Renshi took bronze in the high grade event.

On the Sunday Parker attended the jodo event and came away with the second Dan individual bronze, silver in the pairs competition and claimed the Fighting Spirit award.

All four are now prime candidates to be picked for the British team in Europe this year with Parker also likely to represent the UK in the European Jodo Championships.

KenYuKan study and practice traditional budo disciplines with both sword and staff.

They are currently based at West Wickham Village Hall and practice on Thursday from 7-9pm and on Sundays from 11-2pm. For more information, contact 01440 763003.
