Haverhill’s representation in this year’s FA Vase ended at the first stage as both Rovers and Borough suffered 1-0 defeats in the first qualifying round.

Rovers were defeated by Halstead Town, who ply their trade one level lower, in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division, thanks to Jamie Chesney’s ninth minute header form a corner, which crossed the line before keeper Alex Archer could gather the ball.

Borough’s participation in the Vase ended in even more cruel fashion as the only goal of their match at Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Welwyn Garden City was settled by a David Parkinson shot from the edge of the box with just one minute left in extra-time.

Rovers match had a dramatic twist ten minutes from the end when Halstead substitute Ross Elkins was red carded for picking up his second yellow card - a foul on player-manager Michael Shinn.

Elkins had only just rejoined the Humbugs after a six months spell at Rovers.
