Fitch is aiming to make mark as a professional
The 30-year-old from Haverhill enjoyed a headline billing on trainer Eddie Guest’s latest white-collar boxing show, held in aid of Charity Oscar Walks at Newmarket’s Innocence Nightclub.
And Fitch did not disappoint the capacity crowd, putting on a real showman’s performance, dancing around the ring to overcome Jamal Mills and retain his 82kg Southern Area title in his swansong as an amateur.
“It was a good way to leave the amateur ranks and I’m pleased with how I boxed,” said Fitch, who is also a Thai boxing champion.
“He was a tough lad and a bit bigger than me so it was a difficult one, but I’m pleased to have gone out with a victory.
“The crowd were brilliant and it was a great show to be part of and a lovely send off.
“I wanted to put on a show for Eddie before turning professional and I’m really pleased to have been able to do that for him.
“Eddie has always been there for me and has done a lot for me and this is the least I could do.”
Having signed off from the amateur ranks in style, Fitch is turning his attention to impressing as a fully-fledged professional boxer.
“I’m getting on a bit now, but I want to see how far I can go in the professional ranks,” he added.
“There isn’t really much further I can go in the amateur ranks and so I want to see what I can do as a pro in my final years.
“The way I see it, I’ve got four years left really and it is about seeing how much I can test myself.
“I’m going to drop down from crusierweight to 82kg and be a light heavyweight.”
Fitch has already got meetings arranged this week with a professional promoter, with possible fights at the prestigious York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, already on the cards in the near future.
“I’ve already got some meetings lined up to see what I can do which is pleasing,” he said.
“There could be a lot of opportunities to possibly fight at York Hall now and that is really exciting for me.”
Meanwhile, trainer Guest paid tribute to Fitch for choosing his show as his send off as an amateur.
He said: “It was also honour for me to have Matt Fitch come down here in his last amateur fight and so I was delighted with that.”
