SUFFOLK SENIOR CUP
Woodbridge Town 1
Haverhill Borough 3
Haverhill Borough booked their place in the semi-finals of the Suffolk Senior Cup for the second successive season thanks to Saturday’s 3-1 win on the road at Woodbridge Town.
Borough started the quicker of the two Thurlow Nunn First Division sides and were two goals to the good inside the first quarter of an hour.
In the fifth minute, a fine through ball from Ryan Swallow found Craig Pruden on the right wing and he beat a defender before crossing for Charlie Holmes to scramble the ball in.
Seven minutes later Borough’s lead was doubled through a move that started with goalkeeper Paul Walker’s long kick.
Holmes flicked on the ball to Swallow, who fired low past Alfie Stronge in the Woodbridge goal.
The hosts finally got into the game after this second set-back and Walker needed to be at his best to deny Matt Mackenzie’s effort from the edge of the penalty area in the 15th minute.
Woodbridge pulled a goal back 10 minutes later when Liam Scopes glanced in a header from a deep Sean Rea cross, before Swallow was unlucky not to restore Borough’s two-goal lead.
On this occasion he forced Stronge to a make fine save, tipping his powerful shot from the edge of the box over the bar.
Woodbridge pressed Borough hard in the early minutes of the second half, although with the defence holding firm, Borough were always a threat on the break.
A speculative Casey Phillips lob from the edge of the penalty area thudded against the post and rolled clear with Stronge beaten in the 51st minute, before both Matt Staines and Pruden had further chances blocked.
The game was settled in the 82nd minute after good work on the left wing by James Regan saw Swallow fire home the resulting cross to put Borough 3-1 ahead.
Rory Bone still had a further chance to extend the Borough lead when he fired just over after a quick Borough break.
The game ended with Walker saving from Woodbridge substitute Ryan Keeble.
Borough will learn the identity of their semi-final opponents during Saturday’s draw.
