THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION
Haverhill Borough 4
Cornard United 0
By Josh Brown
Two goals in each half saw a convincing Haverhill Borough collect three points at the New Croft against a struggling Cornard United side.
The home side were on the front foot from the kick-off on Saturday, Matt Staines lifted a free-kick into the box but narrowly missed Bart Pater at the far post.
The visitors’ makeshift goalkeeper, Dave Dowding, then had to make a save to deny Ryan Swallow, all this happened with only six minutes on the clock.
Borough then had another chance, goalkeeper Charlie Turner’s long kick fell to Staines who found him up against Dowding, but failed to take full advantage as his shot was weak under pressure from the approaching Cornard defence.
The home side’s persistence did pay off though after a great piece of skill broke the deadlock.
Centre-back Cameron Watson picked up a loose ball from a corner before juggling it twice and striking it into the top left-hand corner of the net, giving Dowding no chance.
The home side’s lead was doubled going into first-half added time, as a searching diagonal ball from Jon Milne was picked up by Staines. His cross was knocked on by Swallow to the feet of player/manager Martin Westcott, who twisted and then converted his shot into the bottom corner.
Cornard nearly got a goal back directly from a corner in the 50th minute, but keeper Turner was saved by his own crossbar.
After that scare it was all Borough, and the lead was extended to 3-0 just after the hour mark.
Swallow picked up a cutback on the right-hand side and smashed the ball past Dowding.
Borough then secured their fourth and final goal when a searching ball from Pater found Westcott, who picked out Harry Halls on the right-hand side. Halls’ powerful effort was too much for Dowding and completed the scoreline for the home side, who travel to Stowmarket Town on Saturday (3pm).
