THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Haverhill Borough 0 Halstead Town 1
Following their defeat to Woodbridge Town earlier in the week, Borough were looking to make amends in a local derby against their Halstead counterparts on Friday.
The match-clinching moment happened in the 17th minute when Sam Cripps rose between the two Borough centre-backs and directed his header past Charlie Turner in the home side’s goal.
Both Cripps and Ryan Weaver, on his return to Haverhill and able to play at the New Croft again after being banned while at Haverhill Rovers, wasted further chances to add to Halstead’s score.
Borough’s Matt Staines went close after cutting in from the left wing. His shot going just wide as the hosts finally gained a foothold in the game.
With minutes left before half-time, Borough increased the pressure and were unlucky not to go in level at the break.
First, Owen Longley beat Lee Hurkett at the byline and fired in a powerful cross which Jonny Milne headed just over, before from a corner, Halstead’s Charlie Pleace was somewhat relieved to see his misdirected clearance fly over the crossbar with his goalkeeper beaten.
Borough kept up the pressure early in the second half, with Milne forcing Tom Spenser in the Halstead goal into a sharp save with his shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Spenser then pulled off the save of the night, acrobatically tipping over Craig Pruden’s header in the 76th minute after good work from Borough substitute Martin Westcott.
It left the visitors to hold on to the points and place the pressure back on Ely City in the chase for the third promotion spot.
* Tuesday’s game against Cornard United was cancelled to due a waterlogged pitch.
Borough face Debenham LC at home on Saturday (3pm), before hosting Leiston Reserves on Monday night (7.45pm). Then, on Wednesday, they face King’s Lynn Town Reserves at home (3pm).
