SUFFOLK RESERVES CUP
Long Melford Reserves 1
Haverhill Rovers Reserves 4
The young Rovers U21 team, playing under the Reserves’ title, travelled to Long Melford for this Cup fixture and were greeted by a playing surface that suited their style of football.
The home team took the lead against the run of play when, after the ball appeared to go out on the left, a cross followed that caused confusion in the defence as a half-hit clearance was fired home.
The Rovers’ pressure paid off when Mitchell Burr delivered a good left wing cross that was fired home by Will Bailey for a deserved equaliser.
Rovers continued to have the upper hand as Shulver picked out Abila in the box and the striker fired past the outstretched keeper to give Rovers the half time lead.
The second period started similar to the first as it was a scrappy affair.
Melford tried to play long balls while Rovers gave away possession for large parts of the half.
Eventually things settled and again Rovers got their passing game going and nearly scored when a Jebb header from a Shulver free-kick bought the best out of the home keeper.
But, with the Rovers in control it was not long before Ollie Stevenson found Burr, who got the better of the home defence and rounded the keeper to slot the ball home to give his side some breathing space.
The pattern of play remained the same as Rovers retained the ball better than their older opponents. The game was sealed when sub James Austin turned his marker inside the box and fired home a right foot shot to give his team a comfortable victory and passage to the next round.
n Haverhill Rovers A travelled to Haslingfield for the first round of the Reg Haigh/Arthur Peck Cup, and came away with a 6-0 victory for the Community side.
Josh Ruthven’s 25-yard strike put Rovers ahead while Jordan Day slotted home for their second before half time.
Carl Bradford put his side 3-0 up before frontman Billy Bush notched the fourth and fifth (penalty).
Kieran Stratton rounded off the scoring for the Rovers in a deserved win to put them through to the second round.
