THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Haverhill Rovers 1
Swaffham Town 1
Haverhill Rovers were forced to settle for a share of the spoils for the second successive week after being held to a 1-1 draw by Swaffham Town.
Rovers started brightly with the pace of Owen Longley causing problems down the right as he delivered some dangerous crosses that his fellow forwards were unable to get onto the end of, while Swaffham keeper Holt looked sharp to pounce onto loose balls in the box.
Michael Shinn then delivered a good free-kick into the Swaffham box that Martyn Farrant headed just over while at the other end the lively Alex Vincent got the wrong side of the Rovers’ defence as he brought a good one on one save out of Alex Archer.
Rovers continued to enjoy some good possession as Shinn, Baker and debutant Luke Haines looked solid in midfield and Haines nearly got a dream start to his Rovers’ career when his right foot shot got the better of Holt only to see the ball strike the bottom of the post as the scored remained level at the break.
The hosts again started brightly as Shinn played in Weaver with a good through ball that resulted in Weaver being bought down in the box that saw the referee instantly point to the spot.
The penalty duty again fell to Perry Moody who scored from the spot in the recent win at Saffron Walden and he kept his nerve to slot the ball past the outstretched Holt.
Play was fairly even for the next 10 minutes before a moment of controversy was to have an impact on the game when Swaffham’s Jackson went down in a challenge from Longley and without any appeal from the visitors the referee surprisingly pointed at the spot.
Vincent stepped up to send Archer the wrong way and bring the scores level.
Rovers responded well and always looked the most likely to score as Shinn again played Weaver through on goal but he could not capitalise as he shot straight at custodian Holt.
The pressure continued with Longley, Baker and Alleyne all testing Holt, but the points were ultimately shared.
n Rovers travel to Felixstowe on Saturday (3pm).
