THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Haverhill Rovers 0
Long Melford 3
Haverhill Rovers will end 2015 in the top six despite slipping to a 3-0 home defeat to Long Melford in their final game of the year on Boxing Day.
The visitors stuck to their passing game on a sticky pitch, with Jamie Griffiths seeing his early effort at the Rovers goal blocked in the first chance of the late morning kick-off.
Haverhill were overplaying the ball on several occasions, and after Tyrone Alleyne brought down Melford’s Dan Swain in the box, a penalty was awarded by the referee.
Griffiths made no mistake from the spot to put the visitors in front on 23 minutes, and the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division new boys never looked back.
Swain and Griffiths combined down the left flank to then set up Nathan Rowe, who raced in to convert at the far post on the half hour mark.
Haverhill’s Alex Archer saved well at the near post in the early stages of the second-half, but could not prevent Melford from getting a third goal in the 48th minute.
Griffiths dinked the ball over Archer, and despite Rovers keeping his effort out, Rowe was in the right place to fire home at the far post.
The visitors came close to a fourth when Griffiths struck the underside of the bar, yet the final scoreline was enough to highlight an impressive performance from Melford.
