Former West Wratting manager becomes assistant boss at Haverhill Borough
Less than two weeks after leaving West Wratting, Rod Gaffan has been appointed assistant first team manager at Haverhill Borough.
Gaffan was replaced as Wratting’s manager by former Haverhill Rovers boss Michael Shinn on May 10 and was soon asked by both Halstead Town and Haverhill Rovers if he would be interested in taking up an assistant manager position.
In the end however, the former Haverhill Borough Reserves manager, who guided them to the NMC Division 2A title in his 18 months in charge, has opted to accept the chance to be the wing man for Borough’s player-manager, Martin Westcott.
Having been involved with Thurlow Nunn League First Division side Borough prior to his one season at West Wratting (whom he took to fifth place in the Kershaw Premier League), Gaffan was pleased to accept the new challenge, especially as they play at a higher level than Wratting.
He said: “I know the committee so I know how the club works. I know Westy (Westcott) quite well and I get on really well with him.
“He’s been completely honest with me, telling me it’s a 50/50 thing.
“If we can keep 90 per cent of the players at the club then I believe with a couple of added extras I believe they will be challenging next season.
“We want to get promotion and get into the Premier Division and we want to get a bit of a cup run as well and I think the Suffolk Senior Cup is the one everyone wants to do well in because the final is at Portman Road.”
