Haverhill aim to end on a high

Promotion may only be an extremely long-shot now, but Haverhill Cricket Club skipper Joe Woodley still wants his side to end the season on a winning note.

Haverhill welcome Dunmow to Manor Road on Saturday (12.30pm start) for their final game of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division Two season.

Woodley said: “It’s very important to win. We try to win every single game as usual and after last week (95 run defeat at Kelvedon & Feering) as well we want to win the game and put it behind us.

“It was quite a disappointment, obviously with a weakened side, but we are looking to build for next season now.”

For Haverhill to be promoted they would have to win the match and hope that Easton lose their final game and fail to collect enough bonus points to prevent the 13 points margin between the two being bridged.

That would see Haverhill end the season in third, but to go up they need whoever is relegated from the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League (EAPL) to be a club that will drop into the Norfolk or Cambridgeshire league, not the Two Counties.

Even if that happens Haverhill still require Two Counties Division One champions Sudbury to win their EAPL promotion play-off match to create the gap for a third team to be promoted (the bottom two are relegated).

Woolpit are currently 24 points adrift at the foot of the EAPL with one match left.

The most points they can win are 30, so a great escape is possible, but very unlikely.

Seamers Will Bailey and Dan Poole return to the starting XI having both missed last Saturday’s match.

Off spinner Callum Brunning goes in to the game requiring three wickets to reach 50 for the season.
