Haverhill batsmen no match for East
MARSHALL HATCHICK TWO COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP
Haverhill II 84-9 lost to Copdock & OI II 134-8 by 50 runs
Haverhill’s second XI entertained a strong Copdock outfit on a damp and cold day at the Manor Road Oval.
Skipper Greg Street won the toss and decided to have a bowl.
A decent spell of bowling by openers Joe Woodley (8-0-36-0) and Russ Davis (7-1-25-2) brought the early wickets of the two Copdock openers Reuben Sharpe (9) and Archie Gravell (9).
Wickets then fell at regular intervals and on a tricky early season track only Hugh Thomas (45) managed to get a score of any significance.
Martyn Wilkins (12-5-17-2) was as economical as ever and was well supported by Lee Phillips (5-1-18-0) and Harry Harding (8-1-28-3) as Copdock ended there innings on 134-8 and probably a par score given the conditions.
Haverhill started the run chase in the worst way possible with Sam Hartshorn being clean bowled first ball by the experienced James East (9-5-8-3).
He went on to rip through the Haverhill top order and showed his class. A spirited effort from Steve Fox (19) gave Haverhill a glimmer of hope but other early casualties left the home side struggling on 32 for 5 after 12 overs.
Skipper Street (14) and Woodley (20) looked to repair the damage and although they had little trouble in ‘shutting up shop’ they found runs hard to come by against a determined and experienced attack.
Haverhill never looked like chasing down the total but did manage to bat out their overs which in itself was a small moral victory. Copdock were deserved winners ending up with victory by 50 runs.
Skipper Street said: “Copdock were a more than useful side full of quality and experience.
“I thought we bowled and fielded really well and put them under a bit of pressure.
“However, our batting was not great but nothing should be taken away from the quality of the visitors performance, they were dogged with the bat and exceptional with the ball.
“We go again next week with the long trip to Brightlingsea to try and build on some of the positives of this week.”
