Haverhill coach ready for some playing time
Coach Martin Hughes will put in rare playing appearance for Haverhill when they visit March Bears on Saturday.
Fourth-placed Haverhill head to Cambridgeshire to play the team currently occupying third-bottom in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division Two West with Hughes keen to register a win.
When the two sides met earlier in the campaign Haverhill won 64-14 against a weakened March outfit, but Hughes knows the XV that March field at home may be stronger.
He said: “You can’t count on the way we played previously because every team is different when they play away from home.
“I want to win. You look at March’s results and they’ve not done anything this season of note and it’s a chance of getting back on track.”
On his own appearance in a first team match, Hughes said: “I will probably play at ten If I’ve got enough numbers.
“I know I’m missing a centre, Lewis Catterick is not available and I’ve not got Ricky Brown at scrum-half so I’m putting Kieron Ewens in at scrum-half and I will play ten.”
Last Saturday’s Haverhill’s first team match at home to Sawston was postponed but the second team - bolstered with a couple of first teamers returning from injury - went away to Essex University and pulled off an impressive 8-5 win over a side that has been, as Hughes said ‘smashing teams all season.’
