Haverhill hailed for their efforts despite final defeat

Robert Jeffs hailed Haverhill Tennis Club Men’s Aegon team after they narrowly missed out on regional final glory and a second successive promotion.

Having gained promotion from Division Two, the team made up of Joshua Dashwood, Martin Pelliciuol, Tom Marsh, Gratz Senn, Brenton Matthues, Adam Fowle, James Booth and captain Jeffs, built on that momentum in what has proved another promising campaign.

Hitting the ground running, the team came out on top of their five-club Division One campaign, sealing victories over Red Lodge, Ipswich Sports Club and Ipswich-based David Lloyd II and David Lloyd III to clinch Suffolk County League honours.

That in turn saw the club qualify for the regional finals, but they were unable to follow up their Division One heroics as they fell to a 5-1 defeat to favourites Cambridge, with Senn picking up their solitary success.

But despite the disappointment of missing out on regional glory, Jeffs could not hide his pride at the team’s endeavours.

“I was extremely proud of the effort our team put in, he said.”

“They played some fantastic tennis and competed with players of a lot higher rating.

“To put things into perspective, we only have 50 adult members at the club while Cambridge have close to 1,000 club members.

“Just reaching the regional finals is an achievement in itself, it is the first time the club have won a county competition.”

Defeat saw Haverhill miss out on a second successive promotion, but Jeffs believes it could prove a blessing in disguise.

“In all honesty I think we are better off where we are in Division One,” he added.

“Promotion would have seen us playing in the regional leagues and I don’t think a club of our size is quite ready for that just yet.

“Instead we look forward to defending our Division One title again next season.

“Who knows, our efforts might inspire more players to get involved with the club and help us grow further.”
