Haverhill hoping to upset league leaders

Martin Hughes believes Haverhill are capable of nicking a win when league leaders Bury St Edmunds III visit on Saturday (2.30pm).

Bury have lost just one match this season on their way to topping Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division Two West, so third-placed Haverhill will have their work out if they are to win a match that is not just a league encounter, but also acts as the quarter-final of the Cambridgeshire Cup.

However, head coach Hughes is confident the availability of key players such as Ricky Brown, Chris Flannery and Jake Jeffs will give them a good chance of avenging the 34-19 defeat in Bury earlier this season.

He said: “Bury did beat us over there, but we gave them a good game. We feel with the right team out on Saturday we will give them a good game.

“I’m confident we can pinch this on Saturday.

“They are top of the league, all guns blazing, but I think we can give them a tough game on Saturday and hopefully take it.

“I want to win this game. The players want to win the game because they thought they could beat them over there.

“We just worry about who turns up on a Saturday and get the side out.

“As long as the boys give it their all and play to the best of their ability that’s all I ask for.”

On Saturday, Haverhill’s scheduled league opponents Sawston were unable to raise a full team so withdrew from the fixture, handing five points for the win to Haverhill and being deducted five points themselves.
