Haverhill Hornets off to a flyer in first tournament
The newly-formed Haverhill Hornets Junior Hockey Club had their first taste of competitive action against Bury St Edmunds recently.
Three Hornets teams took part and despite having only taken to the sport this season the first of the teams took the lead from an excellent drive down the right by Henry Sidebottom which was well put away by Isaac Strid. Further goals from Henry and Tamsin Harris and solid defending by Harry Cohen in subsequent games saw this Haverhill side into the final, in which they narrowly lost to Bury 1-0.
In the same tournament, two other Haverhill sides showed great determination and some excellent play, notably from Felicity Payne who stopped a certain Bury goal in one of the matches.
Amanda Stopps, from Haverhill Hockey Club, said: “It was an excellent morning of hockey, played in high spirits. “Everyone had lots of fun and showed so much improvement as the games progressed.
“It was fantastic to see so many children involved and we hope that this is just the beginning of great things for the Hornets.”
