Witham II 132 lost to Haverhill II 195-7 by 63 runs

Carl Bradford rescued Haverhill’s innings with a vital 62 to help give their bowlers a target that they ultimately defended well.

After Haverhill lost the toss and were inserted, openers Jake Manning (8) and Sam Street (26) reached 32 in the 10th over when Manning was bowled by an inswinging yorker.

The dangerous Ben McKendry (15-3-46-5) then got rid of Liam Savage (5) and new signing Richard Partridge (0).

Seventeen-year-olds Tom Bailey (17) and Street then batted sensibly without looking in any real trouble until McKendry removed them both.

At 72-5 in the 25th Haverhill were in a precarious position and it was up to new skipper Greg Street and the experienced Carl Bradford to steady the ship.

Street went in the 40th over for a well made 28 and Bradford was well caught by McKendry in the penultimate over. Kettle ended unbeaten on 17.

Partridge and Kettle opened the bowling and the latter was the first to strike, getting Duncan Jenkinson lbw without scoring.

Partridge then took his first wicket when skipper Street took a catch at first slip before Kettle bowled the dangerous Ollie Cooke (17).

Wily old campaigner Martyn Wilkins (9-1-35-2) got in on the act and promptly took two wickets.

Partridge claimed the key wicket of Jimmy Suett (9), with the help of a crowd pleasing juggling act from Wilkins and finished with 10-1-26-2, showing that he will be a more than useful addition to the squad.

Another bowling change had instant results when 13-year-old Harry Harding, making his debut for the second XI, clean bowled Stuart Facey with his second delivery.

The youngster bowled with a maturity beyond his years and after taking his second wicket of his spell finished with the eye catching figures of 8-4-11-2.

Kettle returned and bowled the last two Witham batsmen to see them all out for 132 in the 42nd over.

Captain Street said: “It is always good to get the season off to a winning start.

“This was a particularly pleasing victory with every member of the team having a positive impact on the result. “On paper it might look like a convincing win but Carl Bradford’s innings was the key to us posting a very decent total.

“Without that the result might of been very different.

“The bowlers all showed a good attitude and the extra pace of Richard Partridge gives us an added dimension to our attack.

“A quick word of praise for Witham CC, they produced a very good wicket which offered plenty for both batters and bowlers.

“Both teams played the game in the right spirit and were a credit to their respective clubs.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable day all round and we look forward to our first home game of the season next Saturday.”
