Haverhill Rovers place striker at top of wish-list
Haverhill Rovers player-manager Michael Shinn has targeted signing a goalscorer as a ‘must’ as his attentions turn already towards next season.
Rovers finished their 2014/15 Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division campaign with a 4-1 defeat to Gorleston, a result which means they ended up fourth from bottom.
Rovers have asked many of its under-18s squad to step up into the first team since Shinn took over at the end of September, with budget constraints largely responsible.
This fact was illustrated in the Gorleston match when five 17-year-olds were on the field for the second half.
With planning already underway for next season, Shinn knows the crop of talented youngsters at Rovers will need to be complemented by a few more battle-hardened players.
He said: “I think it’s quite obvious we haven’t quite found the balance at the moment between the young and the more experienced players.
“No doubt all those young players can do a job, there’s not problem about that, it’s just a case of finding a balance between what we’ve got coming through with the Under-18s and maybe an addition or two.
“Someone who can get 18 or 20 goals a season is a must.
“All in all, from when I got the job the aim was to stay in the division and spend as little money as possible.
“We have just about done that. We have stayed in the league and we have got something to build on.
“I know more about the league now and we know what we need to go and get and know more about the young players that we have.”
Rovers are not financially set up to buy their way to success - as some clubs have done in the Premier Division in recent season - but the foundations are there for the club to flourish in the future.
Shinn added: “If we can get something in place now that’s going to last long term I think that works much better than spending money we don’t have.”
Although the dust has barely settled on the season, Shinn is already finalising arrangements for pre-season friendlies and helping to sort out the return of Rovers reserve team for next season, among other things.
