Haverhill Rugby Club will be playing a special match against Harwich & Dovercourt on April 11 as part of their 50th birthday.

The Castle Playing Fields club contacted them to see if they could send over a team - just as they did for the first game Haverhill played in 1964, the year before officially forming.

The match (3pm) is a focal point of the club’s golden anniversary celebrations this season - although it coincides with the season during which the inaugural game was played, if not the exact year.

Although it will primarily involve first team players it is also planned to give players form the second string a run out as well.

After the match the club is having a barbecue, disco and karaoke. Admission is free and all planned to celebrate its 50th year.

Club president Jim Morgan, who also provides match reports and photos for the Echo, has been organising not just the Harwich match, but other events to celebrate the special anniversary.

He said: “It’s free to go to and there’s food afterwards which will be heavily subsidised.

“It will be a bit of a get together and a bit of fun.

“At the end of the day rugby is what we are all about, not having meals, so we’ve got a couple of nice little things coming up in April to celebrate the rugby.

“The buzz at the club is good at the moment. It’s open every Friday night and is open Saturday and Sunday come what may and there’s a good number that gets up there.”

It is also hope that the 50th year celebrations will include a veterans match between Haverhill and a representative Suffolk XV on Saturday, April 25 - part of Haverhill RFC Supporters’ Club’s St George’s Day celebrations.

A three-course dinner is also going to be held at the club on Saturday, May 9, with speakers a disco and a raffle forming part of the evening.

“It’s going to be a bit of a reunion,” added Mr Morgan. “It should be a good night, with 200 or so people there.”

This Saturday, Haverhill are due to play their final match of the season in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division Two West with a rescheduled match away to Saffron Walden II (3pm).
