Hornets land sixth in first county event

Haverhill Hornets finished in a respectable sixth place in their first Under-12s county hockey tournament.

With teams entering from across Cambridgeshire, this was always going to be a steep learning curve for the Hornets, especially with some Under-10s players involved.

Haverhill’s first game of the tournament was against St Ives and, after going behind, the Hornets rose to the challenge. An unselfish pass from captain Cerys Bunch set up Vivienne Payne to score for the Hornets and earn a well-deserved draw.

In the games that followed, Haverhill played against a succession of well-drilled Cambridge City sides.

Molly Read, who stepped in as goalkeeper, frustrated Cambridge with numerous good saves.

Also stepping up from the Under-10s was Felicity Payne, who impressed with her tireless work in midfield.

The Hornets ended their first experience of county level hockey by finishing the tournament in sixth place.

Coach Lucie Page was very impressed with the progress the Hornets had made this year and thanked everyone involved.
