The public have got one last chance to put forward sports men, women, juniors and clubs for this year’s St Edmundsbury Sports Awards.

An American football team, a young netball star, a talented footballer, and three hard working club volunteers are just some of the nominees put forward ahead of tomorrow’s closing date (July 31).

The awards, supported by the Haverhill Echo and sister title the Bury Free Press, will be held at The Apex in Bury on Friday, October 2, with outstanding sporting achievements in the borough set to be recognised.

Run by Abbeycroft Leisure, they also showcase the huge amount of work that takes place within sport in St Edmundsbury.

After enjoying success on the pitch and roads, Bury Saints American Football Team, Bury St Edmunds Tchoukball Club and Haverhill Running Club have all been nominated in the Club of the Year category.

Phoebe Parker, of Jetts Netball Club, and Rhys Shulver, of Haverhill Rovers Football Club, have both been nominated in the Young Sports Personality of the Year category.

Mike Harman and Ian Parker, both of Bury St Edmunds Tchoukball Club, have jointly been put forward for the Community Volunteer of the Year Award.

Julie Ankers, described as ‘the heartbeat’ of Haverhill Rovers who has taken on the roles of club secretary and treasurer, as well as managing a girls team at under-11 level, has been nominated as Unsung Hero of the Year.

Companies Llewellyn Smith, Co-operative Insurance, Cecil & Larter, Treatt, and West Suffolk Hospital Pharmacy have all been nominated in the Most Active Workplace category.

There are 10 categories in total to choose from, also including: Individual Performance/Achievement of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Coach of the Year.

In addition, The People’s Champion will be chosen from a shortlist of all the nominations and the winner decided on by a public vote.

Winners of each category receive a certificate, a souvenir photograph plus £50. All nominees are invited to the awards evening.
