CAMBRIDGESHIRE SQUASH LEAGUE
Devonports Haverhill 4
Melbourn II 1
Devonports Haverhill responded well to the heavy defeat at Comberton last time out to register a big win in their final home game of the season.
Facing a lowly Melbourn team who were battling relegation, Geoff Wilson opened up pitched against the visiting skipper.
Wilson had a see-saw game, twice going behind before he started to control the rallies, bringing his cross-court boast into force as he came through a 9-15, 15-11, 11-15, 15-7, 15-10 winner.
Gary Last was also involved in a five-setter, although he was dominant in the first two sets before his opponent fought back.
Last again stepped up the concentration and played tighter squash to run out a worthy 15-9, 15-10, 7-15, 11-15, 15-7 winner.
Nathan Ttophi looked to have the overall edge in his match, and although his opponent ran down every ball, he took the opener.
After surprisingly losing the second set, Ttophi moved into control again to take the next two sets to win 15-8, 13-15, 15-10, 15-13.
Tony Archer continued his outstanding form so far in 2017. Having only tasted defeat once all season, he kept up this year’s unbeaten run with a dominant 15-6, 15-12, 15-7 victory.
It was left to Daryl Hester to complete the whitewash but, despite starting well and taking the opener, the match was to fall into some gamesmanship and a turnaround saw the Melbourne player come from behind to win 8-15, 15-4, 15-12, 15-11.
Overall, the 18 points for Devonports helped secure their mid-table position.
