James Donnelly, Haverhill Cycle Club’s sole entrant, finished 43rd in the annual Cycle Club Sudbury Hill Climb at Semer on Sunday, posting a time of 63.5 seconds.
Boxford Bike Club’s Samantha Segger smashed a 13-year-old record, scorching up the 500-yard course in 54.7 seconds, taking almost two seconds off the record of 56.6 set by Victoria Pendleton (Mildenhall CC) in 2002. Pendleton later won gold medals at European, World and Olympic level.
There was a record entry of 78, with 67 actually starting, and they were roared on by a crowd of more than 200 near the top of the climb.
Fastest overall was Fabian Horrocks (Veloschills Interbike RT) in 43.9, just half-a second outside the overall course record. He was also the fastest junior (under-18). Last year’s winner, Frank Longstaff (Colchester Rovers), finished second in 44.6.
