Devonports Haverhill 1
St Ivo II 4
It was a disappointing night for Devonports Haverhill squash team who tasted their first defeat of the season at home to a strong St Ivo side.
Alan Cunningham, making his first appearance of the current campaign, played at four and struggled with injury going down in three sets 15-13, 15-8, 15-8.
Devonports’ Gary Last, at two, had a tough encounter losing first two sets, 15-9, 15-6 he bounced back to claim the third 15-9. However, he went 12-2 down in the fourth before rallying well, but it was too much to peg back and lost out 15-10.
Tom Rogers made his debut for Devonports, at five. Up against an experienced opponent, he competed well in the first, only just missing out 15-13. He could not quite match his opponent’s game plan in the following sets and missed out, 15-8, 15-6, but an encouraging start for his first team match.
With the rubber now lost, Malcolm Day, at three, faced St Ivo skipper and could not get in front in any of the sets missing out, 15-12, 15-9, 15-12.
Devonports’ number one, Wayne Bamforth, playing his first team match for a few years, had a five-setter introduction. Claiming the opener 15-10, he went behind losing the next sets 11-15, 10-15. Bamforth stepped up the pace and using his superior squash technique went on to claim Devonports’ only victory 15-10, 15-13 in a good contest.
Devonports are looking for better things when they entertain March II tonight (Thursday).
