Vicky Steed hit a hat-trick as Haverhill II beat Newmarket II 4-1 to open up an eight point lead in East League Division Four North West (South).

The gloss was taken off the win slightly by a scrappy goal just 15 seconds from the end of the match that ended Haverhill’s long run of ten games without conceding.

The away side raced into a 2-0 lead inside five minutes thanks to two Steed goals from open play to take control of the game.

Steed completed her hat-trick early in the second period and Elaine Ward struck home from a short corner to extend the lead before the hosts grabbed their consolation goal at the death.

The result leaves Haverhill II — who go to Newmarket III on Saturday (12pm start) — top of the table, eight points ahead of Newmarket II with eight games to go.

Haverhill first team’s match at home to Cambridge Nomads II on Saturday was postponed due to the frozen pitch but this Saturday they face Division Three North West (South) leaders Cambridge City III at home (3pm).

Haverhill chairman Tina Bunch said: “We gave them a good game early season. We lost 1-0 and came up against their second team goalkeeper and she was outstanding, otherwise I think we would have got a result.

“We will do our best to cause an upset.”
