Teenage ministox racer Cole Atkins has had a season like no other after winning two track championships and being top overall points scorer.
The 15-year-old from Kingfisher Close in Haverhill, came top of the standings in both the Mildenhall Track Championship and the Dover Track Championship, an achievement that also means he came top of the points board with RDC Promotions, the organisers of the two track championships and one of the five promoters that run championships across the country throughout the season.
Cole, a student at Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill, races in the junior class (aged 11-16) of stock car racing in which all the cars are based on a 998cc Classic Mini and built in a steel frame, before racing around a quarter-mile oval track. He has 21 races in the course of a season.
Although Cole previously won the RDC points in 2013, last year’s Kent Championships and the 2013 Long Track Championships in Ipswich, this is his best year since he began in ministox at the age of 12. For four years prior to that he raced go karts.
He said: “We went out at the start of the season to win everything. We won the Dover and the Mildenhall which was not expected as much, so I did better than we thought we were going to do.”
One of Cole’s biggest inspirations is his dad Darren, who raced in ministox from 12 to 16 before driving national saloon stock cars until he smashed two vertebrae in 2002 and had to give up stock cars, moving instead into racing bangers and Reliant Robins, in which he became national champion in 2007.
“I like being on top of the tree and to always beat my dad in a way,” said Cole.
“He did well, so I’m always trying to do what he did.”
As the winner of one of the five ministox promotions in the UK, Cole has qualified to compete at the UK Championships in Hednesford in March and the National Championships in Lochgelly, Scotland, in May.
He came fourth in the National Championships in Barford in 2015, but was unable to finish in the British Championships in Cowdenbeath, Scotland.
The next step for Cole will be racing two-litre saloon stock cars after he turns 16 in June.
The teenager thanked the following sponsors for their support: Happy Haylock Timber Marchants; Premier Tyres; Scrapco.co.uk; Atkins & Sons Scrap Car Collection; Premier Paint & Blast; Haverhill Test Centre; Atkins Motorsport and C&C Sheet Metal.
