Georgina McGivern has been receiving the accolades after passing her second Dan grading.

The Haverhill Wado Freestyle Karate Club member took up the martial art at the age of eight and gained her first dan cadet grade just four years later.

she immediately stepped up to begin teaching adults, and just a year later became an ever-present in teaching ladies self defence in around the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire area.

Georgina then took her adult first dan grade at the age of 17.

Within a month, when passing her KEWAP Instructors course, she not only became one of just 10 female Instructors in the country certified to deliver the course, she also became the youngest.

During her grading, apart from having to deliver perfect techniques in punches, strikes, kicks, kata and breaking wood, she also had to deal with being attacked by 12 people using Knifes, batons and various other weapons.

Her grading then finished with the club’s traditional rounds of full contact sparring, 11 in all.

What made this grading particularly demanding was that she had no prior warning of the grading, and was really thrown in at the deep end.

“For her years, this young lady has an awesome instructional future ahead of her,” said Steve Timperley, founder of KEWAP (Knife and Edged Weapons Awareness Programme).

Greg Maylon, head coach at the Haverhill club, added: “Where Georgina excels is in her ability to deliver not only first class karate coaching, but also everyday self defence, including knife defence.

“The club is proud and honoured to have Georgina as part of our coaching team.”

If anyone is interested in attending a self defence or karate course, the club can be contacted either by calling 07811 878328, emailing hwfk@sky.com of leaving a message on their Facebook Page.

Further praise came from Kevin Upson of the ICO (International Combat Organisation).

He said: “You always know that Georgina will deliver and give 100 per cent.

“She has that aptitude, determination, drive and edge to succeed.”
