Haverhill Rovers had to play with ten men for an hour as they suffered a heavy defeat in Essex.

The visitors went behind on four minutes when Jordan Palmer was left unmarked to head in a free-kick.

Ben Newson’s 20-yard shot into the top corner doubled Stanway’s lead on 23 minutes before Rovers were reduced to ten men on 34 minutes when Ricky Spriggs’ high challenge on Newson earned him a straight red card.

Rovers almost pulled a goal back in first half injury time when Ryan Weaver’s header came back off a post, but four minutes into the second period Jake Clowsley converted a cross to make it 3-0.

Craig Hughes made it 4-0 on 56 minutes, converting a penalty after Ty Alleyne brought down Clowsley.

Alleyne made up for his error two minutes later, firing past former Rovers ‘keeper Jack Cherry following a scramble from a free-kick.

Rovers substitute Marcus Hunt headed on to a post before Newson volleyed Stanway 5-1 up on 75 minutes.

The hosts’ final goal came from the penalty spot on 83 minutes, Jamie Shaw converting after Hunt brought down Pip Boyland.

Rovers return to action on Saturday at The New Croft when they face Mildenhall Town in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round (3pm).

•Haverhill Borough are in Thurlow Nunn League First Division action at the New Croft tonight (7.45pm) when Wivenhoe Town are the visitors.
