Two Stoke College pupils representing East Anglia returned from swimming in a national championships in the iconic London Aquatics Centre with top 10 finishes last month.

The ISA National Swimming Championships, for independent schools, was staged at the venue which served as the pool at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

Pupils who competed across 80 different races included Stoke’s Ruby Bond and Sean McKenny. The pair were selected to represent the East Anglian team after being successful at the regional event in November.

Bond, in Year 6, competed in the backstroke race in an impressive time of 46.40 seconds, finishing seventh.

She also swam backstroke in the team medley relay where her team came seventh.

McKenny competed in the freestyle race achieving a personal best time of 37.55 seconds and finishing sixth.

His best achievement came as part of both the medley and freestyle relay teams for the East where the team came fourth in freestyle.

Stoke College’s headteacher, Frank Thompson, said: “Ruby and Sean performed at an outstanding level and were extremely proud to represent their region in such a fantastic venue. They described their experience as ‘ecstatic’.

“We are very proud of our pupils for having the opportunity to participate at such a prestigious event. He added: “Both Ruby and Sean have worked incredibly hard and their determination to compete is an inspiration to others.”

Rio de Janerio 2016 Paralympic Games finalist Ryan Crouch also attended the event, making it extra special for Bond and McKenny, as well as all the other competitors.
